Comparison of the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro and versus MSI GE76 Raider

During its debut, Apple specifically compared the graphics capacities of the sixteen-inch MacBook Pro against the MSI GE76 Raider gaming notebook. This is how it performs against the other notebooks' specifications. Apple's announcement of their M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, included for both the 15-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro, involved many comparisons with other notebooks available on the market. One of these comparisons was with an MSI GE76 Raider, model number 11UH-053, which is used to collect "High-end discrete laptop graphics performance information." Although Apple utilized the discrete GPU to illustrate how it compares to the latest model, MSI's notebook isn't only defined by the GPU it employs. 1. 16-inch MacBook Pro with MSI GE76 Raider - Physical Dimensions

The MacBook Pro is made of aluminum in Apple's traditional colors that include Silver or Space Gray. With its rounded edges and straight lines, Apple has navigated the lines between practical and minimalist and has a well-worn design style immediately recognizable to everyone else.

Gaming notebooks usually come with a striking design that makes them stand out from ordinary notebooks, and MSI certainly has used similar playbooks in its GE76 Raider. The notebook is constructed of aluminum and plastic and is available in Titanium Blue; the notebook features large vents, a variety of frills on the design, and a lengthy RGB light bar beneath the keyboard.

Of the two models, the Raider is the more physical and has a footprint of 15.63 and 10.57 inches, compared to 14.01 to 9.77 inches in the case of the larger 16 inches MacBook Pro. The difference in size could explain MSI's more prominent display and other less critical design aspects.

It's not clear why MSI is different in thickness. For instance, while Apple chooses to go with a tiny 0.66 inches of thickness, MSI is 1.08 inches, almost twice the size. The additional thickness, coupled with a large number of vents, may assist in cooling the unit in times of heavy loads, but it's still just a bit too big.

The difference in size is an increase in weight and weight, which is the case with MacBook Pro at 4.7 pounds or 4.8 pounds, based on whether you set it up using M1 Pro or M1 Pro, or M1 Max. The Raider weighs in at a whopping 6.39 pounds.

You might want to think about that Raider as a sort of desktop replacement device, given that its weight and dimensions do not suggest it's a highly portable device.

2. MSI GE76 Raider - Display

The scale continues to tilt towards Apple's side by allowing Wide Color P3, True Tone, and its use of miniature LED backlighting. This provides an outstanding brightness of 1000 nits of total screen brightness and 1,600 in peak and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.

MSI's choice of traditional LED resulted in a less bright display, which is around 300 nits on its IPS panel. Perhaps, Apple could have chosen different models with a high-resolution UHD display. Still, since its primary focus was on graphical performance, it was not an essential factor for the company.

They differ in the speed at which they refresh. Apple uses ProMotion which allows MacBook Pro to refresh at 120Hz and adapt the speed to match the content displayed on the screen.

MSI has a maximal refresh speed of 360Hz, which is three times more than the MacBook Pro's maximum. However, it cannot adapt to the content. The refresh rate needs to be set not.

Another exciting aspect is that Apple has very slim bezels around the display, which required the addition of a prominent notch on the top of the screen, to place the webcam. MSI does not use a crack, opting instead for a thick bezel to allow for the webcam.

3. MSI GE76 Raider - CPU Performance

A 16-inch MacBook Pro has a choice of two processor options that include M1 Pro and M1 Pro and M1 Max. Both have identical 10-core configurations featuring two efficiency cores and eight cores with high performance.

The differences begin that the M1 Max has a higher memory capacity of 400GB/s, compared to 200MB/s on M1 Pro. M1 Pro. The memory options available on the M1 Pro start at 16GB with an upgrade of 32GB available as well. In comparison, it is the M1 Max begins at 32GB and increases to 64GB.

Both also have the Media Engine, which handles the encoding and decoding of video in H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW video content. Its M1 Max increases the video encode engine to two against one for the Pro and increases the ProRes decode and encode engines to two per.

Also, the 16-core Neural Engine will aid in tasks that are more suitable for machine learning.

The Raider comes with an Intel Core I9-11980HK processor, a Q2 2021 11th generation chip created with lithography 10nm. The 16-thread chip is 8-core and features a base speed 2.6Ghz, which increases to 5Ghz with Turbo Boost.

The device has 16GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM. However, this can be increased to 64GB when it reaches the maximum capacity.

In the AppleInsider test of the 16 inches MacBook Pro with the M1 Max against the Raider's processor, we consistently discovered some difference in performance between the notebook with Intel processor, based on whether or not it was operating on the battery or the outlet was running it. This will likely save battery life but also degrade performance.

Under Cinebench, the performance test tends towards MSI; however, only a little and only when connected to a power source. In terms of batteries, Apple is still an obvious winner.

4. MSI GE76 Raider - Graphics Performance

Apple's motive for purchasing the Raider was due to its ability to compare graphics and with an excellent reason. The model you choose comes from an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 with 16GB of DDR6 VRAM. It's the same GPU employed by the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, which Apple also tested the Max against at its launch.

Notably, Apple said the M1 Max may offer "similar graphic performance" similar to the "high-end laptop graphics for PCs" within the Raider but uses 100W less power.

Alongside the distinct GPU And the discrete GPU, the Raider includes Intel UHD Graphics, which is an integrated option that is low-power.

The M1 Pro in the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a 16-core integrated GPU that Apple designed but with no separate GPU. Its M1 Max is available with an accelerated GPU with 24 cores or a 32-core GPU and integrated graphics.

As Apple uses a Unified Memory structure, where each of the system-on-chip parts is granted access to the identical memory pool to reduce duplication, The GPU can access precisely the same memory pool as the CPU to perform its functions.

This way, in essence, the M1 Max GPU can have up to 64GB of memory at its disposal. Although it's not private to the GPU like in the Raider, the quantity of memory available is beneficial for those who own the MacBook Pro.

If AppleInsider tested its 32-core M1 Max device, it scored a Geekbench OpenCL score of 68,950. This is quite respectable. However, the Raider achieves 93,617 battery-powered and 133,223 when powered, which is almost twice Apple's score.

It's not a great impression at this benchmark, especially when compared to the M1 Max, in this case, particularly when compared to Apple's "similar graph efficiency" claim. 

We're not sure what tools Apple utilized to test its graphical performance to formulate its advertising message. However, it discovered something that enabled it to assert its claim confidently.

It doesn't diminish the seriousness of the second portion of Apple's claim about lesser power usage. What good does all that performance do if you don't have it for as long on the battery?

5. MSI GE76 Raider - Storage, Connectivity, Power

Its 16-inch MacBook Pro starts with 512GB of SSD storage, starting at the lowest and increasing from 1TB to 2TB, 8TB, and 4TB at the top. MSI offers 1TB of SSD storage NVMe in the Raider; however, the use of two M.2 slots allows for more to be added later on after purchasing.

Connectivity-wise, Apple made the MacBook Pro easy for professionals to use right away without the need for dongles.

They also come with the 1080p webcam and Mac Pro's FaceTime HD camera, making use of the most advanced image signal processor that uses computational video processing to process whatever it records.

Its MacBook Pro uses a backlit 78-key Magic Keyboard with 12 full-height function keys as well as the Touch ID on the top-right side. MSI has a 102-key keyboard powered by SteelSeries Engine 3, providing it with each critical RGB backlighting and anti-ghosting technology.
